Off to Giostashunairy Orbit KTHXBYE

From my good pal Regan, a LOLcat for fans of both the Old Man's War series and Lopsided Cat:

I think that gets your August off to a good start.

Well, we can't let Regan have all of the fun.

I guess this starts a new internet meme?

"LOL-OMW-CATS"?

Oh Noes!

That's silly, Lopsided couldn't climb that far... unless there was a can on tuna on the underside of the spacestation (and it looks like the elevator would start somewhere in Texas).

*beams* Glad you liked. "Giostashunairy" definitely wins, though. :)

Jeff Hentosz:

Handsome cat and most excellent execution, but I'm confused. Is it supposed to be a cat-shaped beanstalk compartment for people, or merely a convenient way to get undigested chipmunk parts into space?

The Mighty Lopsided Cat is clearly on his way up to exterminate the attacking aliens.

Earth is saved.

Most importantly, Beauteous Ghlaghghee is saved.

PS - It has not escaped our notice that there have been no pictures of Her Grace in quite some time. We believe a picture or two of The Magnificence That Is Glorious She is in order.

Why not both?

Hairballs in Space!

As much as I enjoy cat photos -- I must admit the beanstalk is the part that really impresses me. For that diameter stalk in space, it must be made of carbon nanotubes. Or more precisely, a series of tubes, much like the Internet.

It would also explain the large Scalzi lawn, as the root system required to hold such a stalk would take a HUGE amount of surface real estate. It will make it difficult to maintain your rural obscurity. I'd expect a deluge of scientists and nerds any moment.

Fortunately for the Scalzis and their privacy, the Scalzi compound is in excess of 40 degrees north of the equator, rendering impossible a beanstalk base from their Ohio property. ;-)

Thank you, hugh57. When I explain how geosynchronous orbits work to my Physics and Astronomy students, I always then ask How much of the United State's territory is located on the equator? This gets blank looks from most of them.

Then I explain there really is space law, because otherwise you'd be putting satellites in the airspace of someone else's country without their permission.

And we waste our time fighting wars for oil. Silly humans. Always missing the big picture.

ps- http://i17.tinypic.com/4mmlb1s.jpg is wonderful -- now I know what happens to my cat!

And people who like the idea of space elevators.

Dang it, now I have to bombard the Earth with a giant asteroid, and change it's axis, just to salvage my geek cred.

And I was enjoying a leisurely day...
