In Case You're Wondering...

...Yes, I'm fiddling with the look of the Whatever at the moment. Don't worry, it'll all be over soon.

NO!!! Change can never happen. Everything must stay exactly the same forever.

I look forward to what the creative mind of Scalzi can come up with.

AHHHHHH!!! MINE EYES!! ZEE GOGGLES, ZEY DO NOTHINK!!!

John Scalzi | May 30, 2007 11:27 AM

Oh, stop.

I find it odd that the title blurb about "taunting the tauntable since Moses was in daipers" only appears during preview. Normally it looks merely odd, but with the current formatting it's partially illegible - which leads me to suspect that it's unintentional...

For some reason, the background makes me think of money. Subliminal message, or just similar greenish color? I'll choose the conspiracy.

John H | May 30, 2007 11:35 AM

Okay, so what is that?

Bill | May 30, 2007 11:35 AM

Money works, although my first thought was clover. But then St. Patrick's Day was a while back, so money is better.

John Scalzi | May 30, 2007 11:36 AM

John H: What is what?

Patrick | May 30, 2007 11:45 AM

OMG! What is THAT?

Hey kids, don't touch that. We don't even know what it is.

What is that?

Isn't that a...

Wait, what is that?

John Scalzi | May 30, 2007 11:48 AM

The background, for your information, is my lawn, processed through Photoshop pretty severely.

Folks would probably be shocked at how many changes "Whatever" has gone through since 1998.

Pop on over to the Wayback Machine (archive.org), and have a look. I wasn't a reader back then, but some of the headers were kinda neat:

I see that my suggestion to honor the Beauteous Ghlaghghee by changing the background picture to a rotating sequence of Her is being adopted.

But I have some further suggestions: you should remove the green tint and zoom back a bit. I cannot see Her Pure Essence in the background picture.

Her Magnificence does not require photoshopping.

PS - The font in the date string are heinous.

It's awfully bright. I'm not saying that as a criticism, but...

Okay, that was a criticism. It's bright. I'll get used to it. I do like that you change the look a lot, though.

And, like Rook said, an old, old header is still up on the preview page, which overlaps with the new header.

Krissy's gonna be ticked at what you did to the lawn...

Steve Buchheit | May 30, 2007 12:05 PM

I feel so Springy all of a sudden. And there's an urge to go mow my lawn.

Kristine Smith | May 30, 2007 12:15 PM

I, for one, welcome our new grassy overlords...

As someone who has been sucked into an evil website re-design project, my thoughts:

1) I like the green. I don't know how long I'll like it, but for now, it's rather cheery.

2) The header with Whatever in the funky new font (must go look in Adobe to see what one it is) should span all the columns. The way it is now, chopping off after the last letter, is distracting.

3) The grey in the comments background works with the green, the blue up with the headers, not so much.

But anyhoo, change is good, and it's your site, I'm just an enthusiastic supporter.

Where can I buy alphabet soup with norse runes instead of letters? It would be cool if it wasn't mixed with pea soup and puked at the inside of my monitor.

Patrick | May 30, 2007 12:58 PM

Hello Whatever. You look different. New hair cut? Did you lose some weight? Have you been working out? Are you taking Viagra?

well, whatever you are doing, it works for you. Keep it up. ;)

Nathan | May 30, 2007 12:59 PM

Green? Ghlaghghee? I only see the usual cherry blossoms and same fonts as always.

Maybe my 'puter is stuck on yesterday?

Patrick in the Philippines | May 30, 2007 01:31 PM

I like the new background pic.
