And Now, Poetry Corner With Athena

Imagination
By Athena Scalzi

In the night sky I see a bright light
It is right in my eyesight
It's right in my mind.
The gods are so kind to let me see this sight.

I wish I could buy it but I know that I can't
I can try to fly to get a closer look at it
But the thing is
I'm only flying away in my imagination.

I don't know what's better, the fact that she can actually write prose that's better than a lot of poetic lyricists, or that she likes writing just like her dad.

Hold on to that commonality as much as you can,John. Pretty soon it's all going to be about boy bands and crushes.

Brava, Athena! (*claps*). I like this poem.

Girl is talented!!!

J | May 23, 2007 11:28 AM

Why do you have such a cool child?

It is the undoubted influence of the Beauteous Ghlaghghee. Just being in Her presence inspires Her humans to greater things.

Example: Her Magnificence enters the Scalzi household, Scalzi writes and sells his most successful novels shortly thereafter. Coincidence? Of course not.

Chang, you've totally lost it.

Athena rocks all on her own!

Steve Buchheit | May 23, 2007 01:28 PM

Second what Nathan said. Athena rocks all on her own!

Dan | May 23, 2007 01:32 PM

I like it. The ending is unexpected and wonderfully trippy. It's a nice, dreamy poem with a shade of melancholy and an ending that makes me want to go outside and kick the dirt and say "Damn reality."

Omaha Lisa | May 23, 2007 01:35 PM

WOW!!

She never ceases to amaze!

John, you are definitely a candidate for the "Parents of kids who are smarter than they are" club. Get ready for the ride!!

Jez | May 23, 2007 03:01 PM

That was wonderful! Athena certainly is quite the little talent :)

Mary Robinette Kowal | May 23, 2007 04:42 PM

Very nice!

Now, projecting forward--see, I just found some of my writing from when I was Athena's age. If we posit that I am not an idiot and that Athena's writing will improve in a similar proportion to mine, it seems clear to me that she is destined to take over the world.

Cool, because then I can have New Zealand. And that's all I really want.

Hamish | May 23, 2007 05:16 PM

You are more than welcome to come and visit us here in NZ anytime.

Toi tu te whenua.

Jeri | May 23, 2007 08:51 PM

Wow, that's great stuff! Way to go, Athena. :)

Paul | May 24, 2007 12:22 AM

Did she just say she wants to buy a stairway to heaven?

Renee | May 24, 2007 12:48 AM

Well, I suppose New Zealand could do worse. Have any idea what you'd do with it?

Errol | May 24, 2007 07:06 AM

I, for one, welcome our new Scalzi Overlords!

PS, I recently listened to the_road_from_here_to_there_ MP3, good stuff. Also very much enjoying TGB, which John probably appreciates at a different level (as it helps with the ole college fund). I have managed to infect some friends with Scalzi appreciation.
