Coffee Shop Review in Booklist

coffeshop0127.jpg

Hey! Booklist reviewed You're Not Fooling Anyone When You Take Your Laptop to a Coffee Shop: Scalzi on Writing, and it's a really positive review. Aside from calling me "One of sf's most inventive rising stars," which is always nice, the review says:

Whether advising how to handle rejection or debunking concerns over online book piracy, Scalzi writes with irresistible panache, making his insights into the writing business as entertaining as they are instructive.

Awesome. Also: Thank God. If the Booklist review of Coffeeshop had said something along the lines of "clearly Scalzi hasn't the slightest idea what he's talking about," I think I might have slit my own throat. The good news here is that Booklist is the magazine of the American Library Association, which means that now the book might pop up on library purchasing radars, which would make me very happy. On the flip side, this is a limited edition -- 500 copies -- so if you're wanting your own copy, you might want to hurry with that order. February will be here sooner than you think.

Do pre-orders have to be made through Subterranean, or can they be made through Amazon?

John Scalzi | January 27, 2007 08:13 PM

Either is fine.

PixelFish | January 27, 2007 08:33 PM

Hrm. My birthday is coming up, maybe I should hint to my boyfriend. :) (He lurks here, so maybe he'll see this.)

Jon | January 27, 2007 08:56 PM

I don't understand why authors do limited editions like this. You write to make money to pay the mortgage and buy bacon, roght? So deliberately limiting the amount of money to be made on a book seems counterproductive.

I just ordered this on "Sam's Day" at Subterranean. It's actually a gift for someone, but I might get to peruse it a bit myself as well. Looking forward to it.

Tim Walker | January 27, 2007 09:14 PM

Preordered since . . . heck, since Thanksgiving, I think. I'm just about *giddy* with anticipation.

Steve Buchheit | January 27, 2007 09:14 PM

Only 500 copies? Dang, I should have mugged you and taken that copy you had at Confusion.

Of course, then you wouldn't have signed my TAD. Choices, always choices. :)

Well, on the plus side, if it does hit the library order machine, my guess is that a second printing would be in the offering.

Steve Buchheit | January 27, 2007 09:38 PM

Suddenly, I feel nebulous.

Wickedpinto | January 27, 2007 10:00 PM

For a second I thought you were hyping your own efforts without any insigation, and then I realized, that you were hyping your own efforts without any instigation!!!

AWESOME!

Dan Bailey | January 28, 2007 02:17 AM

Sweet! I still have time to find myself a job so I can afford the book on its release date. :-)

Stupid unemployment. :-)

Chang, father of pangolins | January 28, 2007 08:23 AM

Ooohhh, goodie! I ordered mine with TSG back in Dec. I'm psyched!!!

Chang who gots flavor | January 28, 2007 11:54 AM

John,

Does Subterranean prefer if you link to them or to the amazon page? They and you get the moolah anyway, but I was wondering.

John Scalzi | January 28, 2007 12:00 PM

Why would it matter what Subterranean prefers? This is my site.

Chang, father of pangolins | January 28, 2007 12:37 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

'Tis funny. I was just wondering if it makes a difference to them. While it is sclazi.com, they are publishing your book.

Bonnie | January 28, 2007 12:58 PM

I decided to splurge and grab one of those 500 copies. Am looking forward to it.

Also, I just noticed you changed the background again. Personally, I like this one better--it's more soothing.

bensdad00 | January 28, 2007 01:24 PM

Ordered and done - and how all 500 haven't been preordered yet is beyond me - are there not my than half-a-thousand aspiring authors out there?
Sweconding Bonnie's comment witrh a caveat - the new background is nice but the art-deco 'Whatever' now completely clashes in my opinion. (and who cares about my opinion anyway, its not my site)

Sharp | January 28, 2007 01:24 PM

I haven't read any of your books before, but thanks to the one-two punch combo of telling that White Castle-loving hippie what for, and then showing a limited edition book on writing with a clever title, I was immediately obliged to pre-order. I also ordered Old Man's War. Had this incident not occurred, I would say that you would have to be the next Frank Herbert to impress me. Now I will settle for the next Frank Simon. Lofty, sir. Very lofty.

JD | January 28, 2007 01:44 PM

Why just 500? Is this sort of a pre release type thing. You mentioned Limited Edition, is there an 'unlimited edition' on the horizon or do only 500 people get to share your writing guruness?

John Scalzi | January 28, 2007 01:48 PM

JD:

"Why just 500?"

Dunno. Seemed like a good number of books at the time. We may have underestimated. If the run sells through we'll have to think about what we'll do next.

Wendell | January 28, 2007 11:36 PM

#1041 and I don't think Amazon has counted my pre-order yet. Yes, I suspect you may have misunderestimated.

C. MacAuley | May 7, 2007 11:06 PM

I blinked and missed the sale of this book. When might I be able to buy one? Did you know that used copies appear to be available for more than $300? Check this out: http://www.amazon.com/Youre-Fooling-Anyone-Laptop-Coffee/dp/1596060638
