Lightning Crashes

Bad news: Tornado watch until 4am or thereabouts.

Good news: Ginchy thunderstorm which allowed me to stupidly go out on the porch and snap off pictures until I caught some lightning. Man, I'm an idiot. The lights in the foreground, incidentally, are my neighbor's house.

The easiest way to get pictures of lightning at night is to set the camera down on a suitable surface, set an unreasonably long exposure, and leave it.

That's what I did; had it on a tripod.

Keep your eye on this one. It was just here and downed some really large trees in the city, and the top half dozen floors of a large bank tower downtown are currently shedding their plate glass so they've blocked it off.

Nice shot.

Friends and I do the same thing when we go to NH, wait for the thunder storm, go out onto the dock, cameras ready.

And it works, most of the time.

Have you thought of changing your workflow in regards to your posts? I understand that it blows having a "workflow" for spontaneous posts but we don't seem to go a week without hearing that your computer at your post. Maybe doing them in Word or some other editor of choice that auto saves then cut and pasting into here? Just a thought.

You know, I don't actually want advice on how to prevent entry losses when I post an entry about losing an entry. What I want is sympathy. Deserved or not.

Kevin | April 3, 2006 11:16 AM

Sorry, I'm from Mars, not from Venus. I feel horrible about your loss, which is the only reason I would venture to offer advice on preventing it instead of snickering about the fragility of your system...

John Scalzi | April 3, 2006 11:31 AM

Ha! Much better.

PeterP | April 3, 2006 11:59 AM

My sympathy for you is tempered by the use of a Live reference in your post title. For shame!! ;-)

That's one of the few upsides about living in the USA, you get all the cool weather. We never get fun stuff like that here in Scotland.
