Open Thread, 6/9/05

I'll be scarce around here until probably Monday, on account that I'm off to Vegas to hitch up a couple of friends. Sometimes being an ordained minister is fun, fun, fun. So here's an open thread for you folks to play in until I get back. And to get the ball rolling, a zen-like question:

What's the sound of three hands clapping?

I await your thoughts.

The sound of three hands clapping: Um... Freakish?

RooK | June 9, 2005 11:11 AM

A crowd of clapping.

Kevin Q | June 9, 2005 11:20 AM

What's the sound of three hands clapping?

That depends. What are they clapping against?

Ryan Freebern | June 9, 2005 11:44 AM

This seems as good a time as any to point out the SF author stencils I made, including one of our gracious host.

Q | June 9, 2005 11:46 AM

I'm gonna go with:

Assuming the third hand is attached to an arm coming out of the center of ones chest that is...

Three hands clapping is the perfect metaphor for going to Vegas--wedding capital of the world, with more marriage officiants than you can shake a casino chip at--so you personally can marry your friends. Nice.

Paul | June 9, 2005 12:46 PM

syncopation, man!

John Scalzi | June 9, 2005 12:46 PM

"This seems as good a time as any to point out the SF author stencils--"

Yes! They are cool and everyone should go see them.

HanShan | June 9, 2005 01:15 PM

It is a sound of a strict ascetic making love.

Regan | June 9, 2005 01:41 PM

Aw man. I love stencils! I am soon to be donning a Scalzishirt.

As for the sound of three hands clapping... I'm sure it's a Zen koan that Zaphod has pondered many a night after drinking one too many Pan Galactic Gargleblasters. ;)

Ryan Freebern | June 9, 2005 01:47 PM

Regan --

I'd love to see a photo of the shirt if you do actually make it. I haven't gotten a chance to try making one myself, but I plan on it.

"This seems as good a time as any to point out the SF author stencils..."

If you're at all interested, I made vector art versions of the stencils Ryan made. They're the same images, but with crisper lines. Feel free to take them, whether you give credit to me or not. (All the real work was Ryan's anyway.)

They can be found at: Ryan Freebern's Stencils Redone

Wait, AND you're a minister?

What's next? Pilot's license? PhD? Boat Captain?

nalo | June 9, 2005 05:18 PM

My perfect relationship?

Jim | June 9, 2005 05:48 PM

I can't believe nobody has yet said something like on the one hand, on the other hand, and on the gripping hand....

Guy Matthews | June 9, 2005 10:41 PM

I'll go with "splortchity-splortch splortchity-splortch" on grounds that any mutant abomination or alien with 3 hands would also be extremely slimy and oozy.

TerryCtah | June 9, 2005 11:01 PM

exactly like there's 1 too many hands clapping :)

Audrey Estock | June 9, 2005 11:22 PM

The sound of three hands clapping is ccllaapp. Or is it clapap? Hmmm.

Lia | June 10, 2005 09:01 AM

Steve Reich - Clapping Music - performed by three 1-handed performers hitting their thighs. Obviously!

John Scalzi | June 10, 2005 01:12 PM

Out of curiosity, do you think the fact that I'm in Vegas has anything to do with the fact I just deleted 600 poker comment spams?

Jeff Zugale | June 10, 2005 03:19 PM

Oh, of course not, it's only a coincidence. Really, you should be less paranoid.

Dearth Verbose | June 10, 2005 07:41 PM

Perhaps it's similar to the sound of one lip laughing.

Cyndygee | June 11, 2005 04:10 AM

The lights go on . . . but then they flicker???

The Clapper (plus one)

geekOnThePorch | June 11, 2005 01:36 PM

Hmmm ... what IS the sound of three hands clapping?

It IS the sound of one hand clapping, while the other two are in Vegas.

JamesG | June 11, 2005 11:12 PM

Hey, I just returned from Vegas. Perhaps, you could find some of the money I left there. They assured me that they would give it a good home, but...

Have a blast and if you get a chance, having dinner at the Stratosphere is an experience I highly recommend.

Kovácske T. János | June 13, 2005 08:18 PM

hi man,
thats weird. i mean not the 3hands clapping, i mean that yer writing style tends to look witty at the 1st sight and however moderately, but indeed entertaining it is, but then alas whatsoever its rather just a bunch of second-hand wit and humour. so all in all theres a hint of shallowness in it.
Hey man, could you improve? I bet you can! Pls try it, then i might turn out a faithful reader, but else...
Yea, course im kinda trying to offend you, but thats just for yer improvement. and for justful emberrassment over the plagization of good old antony burghess' 'one hand clapping'.

whatsoever best luck.

by the way im just now planning a trip to vegas, so it was really useful to read yer remarks on it. gonna try the double hamburger and hope, its really as good as ya say:)

hey, one more thing, actually the most important issue for me, can you please answer and tell something about the url or irc or icq, cause i ve just never tried, have no idea how to get it downloaded, and i would really like to go for it. specially, cause im away from home for couple of months and i badly need to chat with my girlfriend, who stays home, so pls help, thanx!

John Scalzi | June 13, 2005 09:16 PM

"Hey man, could you improve?"

No. Goodbye.

Justin Anderson | June 14, 2005 11:20 AM

Ummm..."antony [sic] burghess [sic]"? I've got the strangest feeling that he might have heard the phrase "one hand clapping" somewhere before....

Heh, kids today....

John, on the bright side, Kovácske does seem to believe that you'd make an excellent tech support worker, so that's kind of sweet.
